Escrevi o projeto para desenvolvimento do roteiro do longa-metragem Pureza após minhas vivências pelo interior do estado do Maranhão por volta de 2004 a 2006. A história de Pureza parecia tão insólita quanto a quantidade de pessoas que ainda vivem em condições análogas a escravidão no Brasil. Minha vontade em contar a história dela era uma forma de, através da arte e da investigação, tentar salvar outras pessoas assim como ela fez.
Minhas pesquisas sobre trabalho escravo contemporâneo e problemas brasileiros continuaram de forma independente.
A ideia original começou em 2004 e foi realizada por outras mãos.

O filme inspirado em fatos reais, conta a história de uma mãe (Pureza) que sai em busca de seu filho (Abel), desaparecido após partir para o garimpo na Amazônia. Em sua busca, acaba encontrando um sistema de aliciamento e cárcere de trabalhadores rurais. Pureza, se emprega numa fazenda, onde testemunha o tratamento brutal de trabalhadores e o desmatamento da floresta. Escapa e denúncia de fatos às autoridades federais. Sem credibilidade, e lutando contra um sistema forte e perverso, ela retorna à floresta para registrar provas.

I wrote the project to develop the screenplay for the feature film Pureza after my experiences in the interior of the state of Maranhão, around 2004 to 2006. Pureza’s story seemed as extraordinary as the number of people who still live in conditions analogous to slavery in Brazil. My desire to tell her story was a way, through art and investigation, of trying to save other people, just as she did.
My research on contemporary slave labor and Brazilian issues continued independently.

The film, inspired by real events, tells the story of a mother (Pureza) who goes in search of her son (Abel), who disappeared after leaving for mining in the Amazon. In his search, he ends up finding a system of enticement and imprisonment of rural workers. Pureza, is used on a farm, where she witnesses the brutal treatment of workers and the deforestation of the forest. She escapes and reports facts to federal authorities. Without credibility, and fighting against a strong and perverse system, she returns to the forest to record evidence.
